FRAGMENTED ELEMENTS
The Bird Press is pleased to announce its newest and largest scale publication to date, featuring a sheet size of 24x36 inches (61x91 cm) with a 47 inch (120 cm) printed trifold wrapper.
This project began during the quarantines of 2020. The intense atmosphere of anxiety at the time, not just from the pandemic, but also related to a ubiquitous rise in fascist rhetoric, compelled me to explore a metaphysical space of optimistic fantasy. This was not a retreat, but a way of asserting humanity and beauty during what felt like a particularly hopeless time.
The images broadly explore themes of Water, Electricity, Crystals, and Plants by first drawing on films for direct exposure to photosensitive lithographic plates. Each subsequent printed layer was made in response to how the previous one had manifested on the sheet, much like working on a painting. A total of seven or more layers were printed for each image using a flatbed lithographic press.
In reference to the book as an idea, each sheet is printed on both sides with a folio fold through its middle. Additional folds allow them to be viewed in multiple formats: a fold-out sculpture, a book folio, flat side A, or flat side B. This way, each element can be more than one thing, multi-use, interactive, and transformable in meaning both individually and in conversation with each other.
Multiple layer plate Lithography on Mohawk Superfine paper, 24x36 inch sheet size in a Hahnemuhle Copperplate trifold wrapper also printed on both sides using multiple plate.
